Ongoing technical exchange on securing replacements for obsolete nuclear plant items (CGID)

Korea Reliability Testing Laboratory Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "KRT") held its 2nd technical seminar on September 10–11, 2026 in Geomdan-gu, Incheon, organized by the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) Human Resources Development Institute, on securing replacements for obsolete items in nuclear power plant equipment operation and on Commercial Grade Item Dedication (hereinafter "CGID").

This seminar followed the session held in June on the same subject, demonstrating that technical exchange between the two institutions is developing into a regular cooperative relationship rather than remaining a one-time event. Reflecting the field inquiries and practical requirements raised at the previous seminar, this session expanded its content to focus on item-specific verification strategies and actual implementation cases.

Issues involving obsolete items, replacements, and equivalent items arising from long-term operation of nuclear plant equipment are not problems that conclude at a single point in time, but challenges that recur throughout the entire operating life cycle of the facility. Accordingly, the quality verification framework and technical judgment criteria for applying commercial items to nuclear plant equipment must also be continuously refined as field experience accumulates, and this seminar was arranged as an extension of that effort.

CGID is a quality verification activity that identifies the critical characteristics necessary for an item to perform its required function and demonstrates its suitability through testing, inspection, analysis, and document review, so that commercial items not manufactured under a nuclear quality assurance program may be applied to nuclear plant equipment. It is an essential verification procedure for responding to the various technical issues that arise in the field, including obsolete item replacement, supply chain changes, manufacturer changes, and the application of equivalent items.

At this seminar, KRT shared practice-oriented content covering CGID approaches for securing replacements for obsolete items, criteria for selecting critical characteristics, item-specific verification strategies, testing and inspection methods, and technical document review and acceptance criteria. KRT also reaffirmed that ensuring stable operation and quality reliability of nuclear plant equipment requires systematic verification that accounts for the function and application environment of each item, going beyond simply procuring a replacement.

KRT is a specialized testing and evaluation institution that verifies the quality reliability and technical suitability of a wide range of industrial products through reliability testing, performance evaluation, environmental testing, and precision analysis. Drawing on its experience in CGID and the nuclear sector in particular, KRT performs replacement item application, quality verification, technical review, and test evaluation for nuclear plant equipment and components, providing objective and practical verification services required in the field.

KRT plans to continue its technical exchange with the KHNP Human Resources Development Institute and contribute to strengthening practical capabilities in nuclear plant equipment operation and quality verification. Through repeated exchange, KRT aims to build a virtuous cycle in which field requirements are accurately identified and reflected in its testing and verification services.

Korea Reliability Testing Laboratory will continue to fulfill its responsible role in regional and national industrial development as a specialized testing and verification institution dedicated to ensuring the reliability of nuclear and national industrial facilities.
